| We have been working diligently on organizing the periodic table in class. Students followed in the footsteps of Dmitri Mendeleev as they looked at the characteristic properties of each puzzle piece to help them assemble it. Students then had to predict two missing pieces based on all of the pieces that surrounded them. I am posting the lab (but not the answers!) below. You can also find the outline for tomorrow's quiz! |

Today students were tasked with becoming Rutherford and using their knowledge to help them figure out a shape they could not see. Students bounced marbles off of a shape under a piece of cardboard in the same way that Rutherford bounced alpha particles off of a nucleus to help them try to determine the shape. Students considered the trajectory and reflection angle while doing this. We will revisit this concept today with the following PhET simulation: https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/rutherford-scattering *You must have Java installed to run this application. Please visit Java.com for the free download! Today we officially kicked off Unit 2! We are beginning by exploring the definition of matter, talking about different types of models and taking a walk through atomic history! We started off by doing a card sort to determine whether different terms were matter. Then we had define models using different scenarios. We finished up by putting the atomic theory timeline that we did yesterday into our notebook. Check out the notes below if you missed them! Tomorrow we will replicate Rutherford's gold foil experiment using marbles and cardboard!
Due to the in school volleyball game, we were only able to complete the Unit 1 Test Analysis today. We will continue with Unit 2 tomorrow. Look for notes to be posted later this week!
Beginning Monday, we will start our first unit on properties of matter. Students will be assigned an outline to review over the weekend, and they will have a ONE question quiz on it Monday! My advice to you is to read the outline closely at least THREE times! This quiz will NOT be a recall quiz so don't memorize the information! Instead, strive to understand the information and be able to apply it to a new situation! I am posting the outline below in case you forget your notebook! |
