Today we finished up the study aid for the Chemistry Lab Equipment quiz that will be next Wednesday, January 15th. You will need to know not only the name, but also how each piece of equipment is used. In addition to this activity, we also added the first three definitions for Properties of Matter to our notebooks on pages 4-5. Please check and update your table of contents!

Today we worked on setting up our Science Notebooks (SN) for the second semester. Below you will find some pictures and captions that should help you if you were absent. Please ask friends or come see me if you have any questions! In addition to this, we also received the study aid for our chemistry equipment quiz that will take place NEXT WEDNESDAY, January 15th! We also received the January calendar to be glued on the LAST page of the SN!
BRRRR! These crazy Alabama weather trends! Today was our first day back at school for the second semester. Here is a little bit of back to school information to get your started: 1. We are on a two-hour weather delay up through Wednesday! (See you bright and early at 10 AM!) 2. Report cards are still scheduled to go out on Thursday, January 9th. 3. Students will need to have their new/unused Science Notebook ready for Tuesday, January 7th! Here is what we accomplished today: As I said earlier, students will need their Science Notebooks for Tuesday, January 7th. I assigned the first extra credit today in the form of a fancy title page! ALL students will be required to complete a title page with the following two things: 1.) Your first and last name 2.) "Spring 2014". If you would like to receive 5 points extra credit, you must include at least five illustrations that have something to do with chemistry. These can be any illustrations of your choosing! Also, the ENTIRE page MUST be in color. This extra credit assignment will be due the first time I check notebooks! Here is what mine looks like if you need some inspiration!
Welcome back to our second semester of Physical Science. This semester we will be focusing on Chemistry and the Properties of Matter! We will cover the following Alabama Course of Study Science Standards this nine weeks.
8.1.0 Identify steps within the scientific process Applying process skills to interpret data from graphs, tables, and charts Identifying controls and variables in a scientific investigation Measuring dimension, volume, and mass using SI units Identifying examples of hypotheses Identifying appropriate laboratory glassware, balances, time measuring equipment, and optical instruments used to conduct an investigation 8.2.0 Describe the structure of atoms, including the location of proton, neutrons, and electrons Identifying the charge of each subatomic particle Identifying Democritus and Dalton as contributors to the atomic theory 8.3.0 Determine the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons, and the mass of an element using the periodic table Locating metals, nonmetals, metalloids, and noble gases on the periodic table Using data about the number of electrons in the outer shell of an atom to determine its reactivity 8.4.0 State the law of conservation of matter Balancing chemical equations by adjusting coefficients 8.5.0 Differentiate between ionic and covalent bonds Illustrating the transfer or sharing of electrons using electron dot diagrams 8.6.0 Define solution in terms of solute and solvent Defining diffusion and osmosis Defining isotonic, hypertonic, and hypotonic solutions Describing acids and bases based on their hydrogen ion concentration 8.7.0 Describe states of matter based on kinetic energy of particles in matter Explaining effects of temperature, concentration, surface area, and catalysts on the rate of chemical reactions As always, if you have any questions about what we are learning in class, please come see me during 4th period or email me at [email protected]! |
AuthorI am an 8th grade Science teacher in Leeds, Alabama. This is my fourth year teaching science. As a teacher, I would love nothing more than to teach my kids to question the world around them and to never stop learning. Archives
