With this blog I hope to chronicle what we are doing in class to keep you up to date on our discoveries!
Today students added the following information to their Table of Contents: 8/29 Notebook Check Rubric 19 8/29 Forces Brainstorm 20 8/29 Forces Unit Essential Questions 21 8/29 How do Scientists Change the World? 22 Above is the rubric for the first notebook check. The test and notebook check will both cover pages 1-18. Our first test will be next Thursday, September 4th! Below you can check your table of contents to make sure you have it all. If you missed this class, please copy the link below and input into your browser's address bar to access the story. Read pages 9-11 before answering the questions.

Today we finished all of the Olympic centers that did not get completed yesterday. Students were also give a prompt to go with their essential question to be answered on page 18. Check out the prompt below if you missed this class! (Please write the EQ and Prompt on your own page 18 before answering the question!)
Welcome to the Metric Mini Olympics, where brute force and super speed are no match for estimation ability and accuracy! Today the kids worked in centers themed after the Olympics. Each center focused on a specific type of estimation and measurement. Events of the day included: 1. Paper Plate Discus Throwing 2. Straw Javelin Throwing 3. Cotton Ball Shotput 4. Right-Handed Marble Grab 5. Left-Handed Sponge Squeeze 6. Big Foot Challenge Students were attempting to get the closest to the actual measured number. Check out some of the great shots below. We will finish up this lab tomorrow and revisit our Essential Question "How are accuracy and measurement important in my life?" with a reflection in their science notebooks. Interested in using this lesson in your own class? Check it out here: http://cmase.uark.edu/teacher/workshops/AIMS-lessons/mini-metrics.pdf
The following students scored 90% or higher on the quiz for pages 1-12
Taylor Seth Emmy Dalton Bailey Grayson Cara Jacob H. Jared Macey Clair Shelby Whitney And even more awesome than that, THREE PEOPLE made 100%! Denia Leonel Tyler B. We completed our first 50 point quiz today. Grades will be posted as soon as I have the chance to finish grading the open-ended portion. Once finished, students were asked to write a letter to me answering a letter I had written to them. If you did not finish, check out the letter below:
Today in science we reviewed bar graphs and line graphs. This will become especially important when we begin our AMSTI experiments as they rely heavily on graphing. Check out the notes below if you missed them in class! Also, our first QUIZ will be TUESDAY, AUGUST 26th! P.S.~ Hand sanitizer does NOT freeze!
Today we went through a LOT of different information. The first order of business was to discuss how to create hypotheses using If-Then statements. We made observations and then created a hypothesis about whether or not hand sanitizer will freeze. I'm excited to see how this turns out because even I have no idea whether or not it will work! That's the best thing about science....I can still learn new things, too! We continued our notes with a video from Brainpop on precision and accuracy. I would post the video here, but unfortunately it requires login information to see it! Sorry! Finally we concluded our day by discussing tools of science and SI Units. Check out the notes below if you missed the class!
Today we examined ourselves and made observations about our fingerprints! After playing a mystery game, students were challenged to examine their fingerprints in close detail using a loupe, and try to determine what type of fingerprint they had. We also took a few notes on making observations that you can check out below!
I apologize in the delay of notes lately, but I am experiencing technical difficulties! Hopefully it will be remedied soon!

AuthorI am an 8th grade Science teacher in Leeds, Alabama. This is my fourth year teaching science. As a teacher, I would love nothing more than to teach my kids to question the world around them and to never stop learning. Archives
