We had an absolutely awesome experience with Jenny Cook from the Dauphin Island Sea Lab today. Not only did she bring a wealth of information about our local coast, she also brought some really great specimens that the kids could touch and interact with. I got tons of great pictures and learned something new with each class! It was GREAT!

Today in science, we explored isotopes and the forces at play in an atom. We also learned about atomic mass and atomic number to help us further develop our understanding of how protons, neutrons, and electrons work together to make an atom.
The History of Atomic THeory Parts of an Atom
Today was a fantastic day of experimentation with density and buoyancy. As we have been examining fluids, we have learned quite a lot about their properties. Today we learned about ways to change overall density by changing shape, changing mass, or changing volume. The kids were tasked with creating an aluminum foil boat that would hold as many pennies as possible. We had some really great designs! The winning boat held 250 pennies! Check them out below!
Did you know that if you put cans of soft drinks in water, some of them will float while some of them sink? The amount of sugar a drink has in it will determine whether it is more dense or less dense than water. We reviewed density while examining this phenomenon and then tied in buoyancy by dunking a few ping pong balls. We have been discussing in class the effects of forces on fluids and have looked at both atmospheric pressure and water pressure. Check out the two sets of notes below if you missed them in class!

AuthorI am an 8th grade Science teacher in Leeds, Alabama. This is my fourth year teaching science. As a teacher, I would love nothing more than to teach my kids to question the world around them and to never stop learning. Archives
