This week we are exploring thermal energy more in depth and today students started an experiment to test how different cups allow thermal energy transfer. We will continue this experiment tomorrow, and analyze the data on Friday. Below are the notes handed out earlier this week.

We have spent a good amount of time discussing how energy cannot be created or destroyed and now we will begin to apply that information. We worked with the interactive below today and glued in some everyday objects to begin exploring on Tuesday.
https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/energy-skate-park-basics Today we started experimenting with and planning our coaster designs. The marble must travel the full 24 feet on the track the entire time and the coaster must have at least a second hill (after the first) and one loop! Tomorrow we build for real and present! Today students experimented with getting their marble to travel around a loop by changing the start height and the height of the loop. We will discuss tomorrow how changing the start height affects the potential and kinetic energy before beginning to build our "full size" marble coasters. Today we started a roller coaster lab that will take us several days to complete. Students were provided notes that they must either color or summarize by tomorrow. Today we took data that we will analyze tomorrow to determine energy transformations within a rollercoaster.
Today students were given a "Permission to Tape" form that needs to be returned ASAP! Thank you for your help!
We are going to hit the ground running this week by delving into ENERGY! There are a lot of fun things associated with this subject so we will need to get our thinking caps on tight to push through! Students will be bringing home permission forms to be filmed in class for my current National Board Certification module. I would love it if each and every one of them could participate in the video because it provides an accurate glimpse of our classroom and how we do what we do! See you tomorrow!
Tests are OVER! Time to wind down with a fun engineering challenge! Today students had 18 inches of tape, 2 sheets of paper, and TEN MINUTES to make the longest paper chain they could!
Today students made a notecard of information for their test! Don't forget to bring your notecard to the test!
Today students created questions from each of the different units that will be tested on Thursday. Each question had to be multiple choice with FOUR logical answer choices. I will use all of the questions collected today to create a Kahoot that we will use to review in class on Wednesday. To practice at home, use the following link:
